One of the main issues frequently cited as a problem for dairy farming businesses is the availability of good staff. One of the main considerations of a potential new staff member is the quality of housing on offer. If you are struggling with staff recruitment and retention, is your housing up to scratch? Is the herdsperson’s spouse happy with it?
This is a particular issue if other aspects of the job on offer are not absolutely ideal. This could be (for instance) if the farm is well away from a dairying area; if some of the farm facilities are a bit old or tired; or if the salary you can afford is not top-notch.
So, try to look at the house on offer from the viewpoint of the potential occupants. Would a thousand or two spent on it now make you a lot more money, as you would be able to attract the best possible candidate for the job on offer?
