Despite us having left the EU on 1st January, we are still taking advantage of the Private Storage schemes in order to take commodities off the market. At the end of September, the UK had 1,651 tonnes of butter in store, and 3,136 tonnes of cheese stored under the EU’s storage scheme. There was no SMP in PSA. This may be regarded as just a little cheeky….
But if course it does prove that we needed such a provision earlier on this year. The scheme helped take product off the market when there was a surplus. That provision will no longer be there after December, making the dairy markets just a bit more volatile.
